Atlantic City Boardwalk
Atlantic City, New Jersey
As early as the mid-1800's, Atlantic City was considered prime real estate and the perfect location for a potential resort town.  In 1853, the first commercial hotel, The Belloe House, located at Massachusetts and Atlantic Avenue, was built.  In 1854 the city was incorporated, construction of a lighthouse began, and train service from Philadelphia was established.  By 1874, nearly a half million people a year were coming to Atlantic City.

The first boardwalk was built in 1870 along a portion of the beach in an effort to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies.  Businesses were restricted and the boardwalk was removed each year at the end of the peak season.  Because of its effectiveness and popularity, the boardwalk was expanded in length and width.  Before the Great Atlantic Hurricane in 1944, the boardwalk stretched 7 miles from Atlantic City to Longport.

Superstorm Sandy arrived in late October 2012 and devastated the Eastern United States.  From Florida to Main, thousands of people were injured and left homeless.  Particularly hard hit was New Jersey and its shore towns.  In support of Sandy's victims, the wood used to make these pens was purchased from salvaged remnants of the iconic and destroyed Atlantic City Boardwalk.
